Eli Kimmel 8th grade Language Arts December 8, 2017 Research Paper Fly-Tying Do you think that materials have been changing between the beginning of fly tying, and now? Materials have changed to become cheaper and to make fly tying patterns look more realistic. When fly tying started, materials were retrieved from animals. Fly tying has changed much over time, especially on materials going from natural to artificial. Fly tying is evolving from materials becoming artificial to make fly tying patterns look better. To begin, “fly tying materials have changed to catch more fish and attract more fish. Using the modified materials works a bit better to catch fish.” Artificial materials are better for fishing because you do not have to kill animals and the artificial materials last longer. “There is an increase in quality of materials because the better the quality the longer they last. It is better for the environment when we tie flies with artificial materials because we do not have to kill animals to get the materials, we can make the materials.” (Allan G. Simpson) In addition, fly tying patterns have definitely changed. “The three basic elements of a fly are the size, shape/form, and its color.” (Advameg.com). Popularity of fly-fishing in the U.S. peaked between the 1920s and the 1950s” (Howard Meyerson). “Using scents on flies is a controversial topic on whether it should be classified as cheating or not” (Chad Shmunkler). “Some tips on tying flies are; practice makes perfect, ugly flies catch fish, pretty flies catch fishermen, but a well-tied fly catchesboth” (the-catch-and –the-hatch.com). Next, “people started tying flies and fishing with them at least in the second century-third century time area. The first credited people to tie flies were roman naturalist, Claudius Aelianus. The first credited person to write a book on fly tying was Dame Juliana Berners. The first flies were thought to be made out of hooks and red-wool and a wax colored feather from a rooster’s wattle” (Dub Paetz). In conclusion, fly tying is evolving because people are using materials that are artificial to make fly tying patterns look better, and attract more fish. Materials for fly tying are beginning to become more artificially made. Fly tying patterns have been changing to attract and catch more fish. When did fly-tying start? No one knows exactly. It is fun to get creative when you tie your own flies and use your imagination. You have to experiment to see if your flies will catch fish and make adjustments until they do.

Student's Choice Reflection
List one thing you've learned from writing this paper that you have applied to other writing assignments. I have learned that in 8th grade I didn't write papers very well.
Identify a challenge you faced while writing this paper (this can be at any stage of the writing process). How did you overcome the challenge? What did you learn? A challenge that i faced when writing this paper was to find good articles to quote for the paper.
What genre does this paper fit? How do you know? It fits in the research paper genre. I know because it was the research paper for my 8th grade project.
Given more time to work on this paper, how would you improve it? I would have maybe found some better articles if I would have had more time.
Why did you choose to include this paper? What do you want me to learn about you as a writer? I chose to use this paper because I thought that it would be nice and easy to put on this portfolio.
