Eli Kimmel Ms. Lehmann English 2-1B 3 December 2019 Review of “With Friends Like These” A wise person once said, “A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” Dorothy Rowe’s article, “With Friends Like These,” is an easy read because it flows well, is very straight forward, and is easy to understand. The main topic, friendship, is relevant to readers. Another way that this article is worthwhile is the author’s background. Dorothy Rowe has a doctorate in psychology, and worked as a psychologist for her career. Her purpose of writing this story is to inform us about how friends help us validate our ideas and shape who we are. Rowe’s writing style in this article is personal because she uses examples from personal experience and uses first person pronouns. Rowe’s formatting is simple and easy to follow, but it is informal and relatable. She uses section titles, which when used right are extremely helpful. Readers know immediately where to find certain information from the article. Rowe’s introduction was put together very well. She stated her main claim clearly and her hook does draw readers in. The organization of the article is aided by the section titles and good transition sentences, which make for a smooth read. The content, which includes the main claim, is evident in the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction states clearly what the paper is going to be about, and the conclusion finalizes it well. Rowe shows that friends help us interpret and validate our surroundings. Rowe’s research and support in this article is her own personal and professional experience. The article does lack outside research, but it is good for basic information, if not for in-depth research. The main point of the article is to show that friends help us to develop into who we are, and that it is important to have them for emotional support. Her purpose in writing this story is to inform us about how friends are made and lost. Her article is informal, but relatable, because she uses first person pronouns, and uses personal experiences for examples. Her hook and introduction are stated clearly, and the conclusion restates the main claim effectively. This article is very good for basic information, but not for in-depth research. In conclusion, this article is good for a greater understanding friends and our human need for companionship.
